n. [ L. ampelitis, Gr. 'ampeli^tis, fr. 'a`mpelos vine. ] (Min.) An earth abounding in pyrites, used by the ancients to kill insects, etc., on vines; -- applied by Brongniart to a carbonaceous alum schist. [ 1913 Webster ]
